These turkey and cheese roll-ups are a quick and tasty option when once again you are wondering, “What’s for lunch?” This recipe is part of my Healthy Bites for Kids series, featuring easy recipes for breakfasts, lunches and snacks. At least now that it’s summer I don’t have to worry about packing lunchboxes. But when 11:30 rolls around and everyone starts to get hungry, it’s nice to have a plan in mind. So far this week we’ve done peanut butter and jelly, quesadillas, fruit/veggies/hummus, leftover mac and cheese, and these turkey and cheese roll-ups.

Turkey and cheese roll-ups are one of Julia’s favorite lunches. Except I think I may have ruined them for her this week by putting tomato in them. I’ve made these countless times for her in the past, without the tomato. Each time, she’s eaten them all and told me that she loved her lunch.
She loves tomatoes, so I thought I’d try to sneak in some extra produce by adding them to the roll-ups. Bad move. She went from saying that next time she wants the tomatoes on the side rather than in the roll-ups, to telling me she doesn’t want to eat these again until she tells me she wants them again. Kids. Just when you think you’ve got them figured out, they go and change their minds on you!
You’ll have to think about your own tastes and those of your family and decide for yourself whether to add the tomato or not. Personally, I enjoy these with the tomato.
I always use Applegate Farms turkey breast when I make these, since it’s antibiotic-free, with no added nitrates or nitrites. (Applegate Farms doesn’t know I’m mentioning them in this post, I just love their products.)
During the school year, I would pack these in Julia’s lunchbox (and my own!) and they hold up really well. And despite her comments today, I’m pretty sure Julia will come around to loving these again really soon. I just have to remember, kids like foods simple and separate from each other! Tomatoes on the side it is. 😉
- 2 eight-inch whole-wheat tortillas
- 2 tbsp. cream cheese
- 2 slices turkey breast
- 2 slices cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese)
- 1 small tomato, thinly sliced (optional)
- Spread 1 tablespoon of cream cheese onto each tortilla, spreading it all the way to the edges. Place turkey, cheese, and tomato slices on top. Tightly roll up each tortilla and then use a sharp serrated knife to cut into 1-inch-thick round slices.
