I’m excited to announce that our beautiful baby boy, William, arrived last week.  He is the sweetest little guy and we are completely smitten with him.  We are so happy to have our precious little William home with us, and he’s such a content and happy baby.

Julia has really taken to her role as big sister, and loves to help with baby brother by getting a diaper or burp cloth, or entertaining him with the monkeys that swing over his pack and play during diaper changes.

Right now we are busy adjusting to and enjoying life as a family of four, but I’ve already been able to get back into the kitchen a little bit.  Before William was born I worked ahead writing a few posts, so you should still find some new recipes here in the near future.

What I’ve been reading…

Normally I stick to food as a topic for the blog, but I’ve read some great books lately and was in the mood to share. :) Here are a few of my favorite recent reads, and yes, I’ve been doing quite a lot of reading lately! Most nights I read before going to sleep, and I’ve also been doing some daytime reading when my pregnant body calls out for me to put my feet up and rest. I hope you’ll find a book on this list that’s of interest to you, too.

Most recently, I’ve finished The Hunger Games trilogy, by Suzanne Collins. While waiting for my baby boy to arrive, I’ve had some extra downtime to relax, so I was able to finish all three books in about a week and a half. I couldn’t put them down!

What Alice Forgot, by Liane Moriarty, is a fun read about a thirty-nine-year-old woman who loses her memory for the past ten years of her life after a fall at the gym. A lot has changed in the past ten years- she’s now a mother of three and in the middle of a divorce, but doesn’t remember any of it.

The Lost Wife by Alyson Richman- I absolutely loved this book. Nap time went by far too quickly during the week when I was reading it. Two young people in love are separated during the Nazi invasion, and the story is told by going back and forth between each of their stories, in Nazi Europe and New York. The book begins by hinting at a reunion between the two at their granddaughter and grandson’s wedding.

The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Rubin- This I’ve been reading a chapter at a time, alongside other books. It’s inspiring to read about the simple ways that the author found to bring more happiness into her daily life.

Molly Wizenberg, author of the blog, Orangette, wrote A Homemade Life, the story of how she started her blog, and the other life events that happened along the way. Delicious recipes are interspersed throughout this touching story.

Wildflower Hill, by Kimberley Freeman- When an injury prevents Emma from continuing her dream as a ballerina, she moves to Australia to prepare to sell the estate she inherited from her grandmother. While there, she uncovers the mysteries of her grandmother’s past.

Sarah Jio is one of my new favorite authors, and The Violets of March was her first novel. Once you start reading, you won’t want to put it down. I also read and enjoyed Jio’s The Bungalow.

Sister of My Heart, by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni- I thoroughly enjoyed this story of Sudha and Anju, two cousins born in India, and their arranged marriages, family secrets, and the different paths their lives take.

Do you have any book recommendations to share?  I’d love to hear them!

I made these blueberry cupcakes for an extra special reason- our little family of three will be growing in a few months! We are expecting a baby boy in early May and couldn’t be more excited. Julia is going to be such a great big sister to her new baby brother.

Early in my pregnancy it was definitely a challenge to keep the blog going, when just the thought of many foods that I normally enjoy made me feel sick. Who would have thought that chocolate cherry scones could ever sound disgusting to me? (Still, I have trouble looking at a few of the food photos from those first trimester posts!) I’m well past all that now, and am enjoying spending time on cooking, photography, and blogging again.

I baked up these blueberry cupcakes to celebrate our soon-to-be little bundle of joy. The cupcakes were delicious, and I’ll be sharing the recipe tomorrow.

Weekly Meal Plan- December 13, 2010

I have been making a weekly meal plan for many years now, and have finally decided to post my meal plan on my blog each week! I will do my best to post the meal plan for the following week on Saturday or Sunday, but occasionally a crazy week may prevent me from doing so. I’m sure you’ll understand. :) Whenever possible, I’ll link to the recipes if they can be found on my blog or elsewhere online.

In my kitchen, I keep a small notebook to record each week’s plan. It’s nice to be able to look back through the notebook to get ideas from past weeks. (I’ll also put notes on the pages ahead when I think of ideas for the upcoming weeks, or when I need to remember to eat that casserole that I stuck in the freezer!) One of the best things about having a plan for the week is that it allows you to then make a grocery list and only shop once for the week.

I find meal ideas in a variety of places. Most often I find recipes in magazines, cookbooks, and on the blogs I read. I also have a set of tried-and-true favorites in my recipe binder. At any given time, I have many, many recipes in my “want to try” file. Some of these recipes are starred in my Google reader, and I keep those that are paper copies in a large Ziploc baggie. (I also have a manila file folder of those that I really want to try soon- I know, I’m a bit of an organizing nut!)

When I’m planning for the week I take the following into account:

  • What is our schedule like each day? On worknights or other busy nights, I plan faster, easier meals. I enjoy cooking more complex/time-consuming recipes on my days off.
  • I try to include a variety of foods each week. For example, if we’re having chicken one night, maybe the next night we’ll have pasta or beef. I try to include at least one vegetarian meal each week, for both budget and health reasons.
  • We usually have at least one “leftovers” night each week. I love those nights when I don’t have to cook, but still have a healthy meal prepared for my family.
  • While I’m not always good at this, I do try to check which ingredients we have on hand in the pantry, fridge, or freezer and incorporate those into the meal plan. For example, if I purchased goat cheese for a meal one week, I might try to make good use of the cheese that’s left in a meal the next week.

And here it is…this week’s meal plan!

Monday: Leftovers: Brown Sugar Spiced Pork Loin, Sweet Potato-Pecan Casserole, Green Beans

Tuesday: Spinoccoli Pizza, green salad

Wednesday: Farfalle with Speedy Tomato Sauce, Cannellini Beans, and Broccoli Rabe

Thursday: Chicken Sausage Sandwiches

Friday: Pasta with chicken sausage and vegetables, green salad

Saturday: Family holiday celebration

Treats/Baking:  Cherry Cream Cheese Cookies
