Restaurant-Worthy Steak Tips, Made at Home
Enjoy a restaurant-quality meal at home with these steak tips! With just 20 minutes of prep time, this easy steak recipe is perfect served with mashed potatoes or rice and glazed carrots.
What makes this steak tips recipe so good is the marinade. It brings savory, umami flavor and makes the steak so tender. Cooking these steak bites quickly in a hot skillet sears the outside for a golden brown crust while keeping the inside juicy. You can marinate the steak up to 6 hours ahead of time, which makes this recipe one of my favorites for busy weeknights!
Best Cuts of Steak for this Recipe
The best cuts of steak to use for making steak tips are sirloin steak, beef tenderloin or tri-tip. Don’t use stew meat, which is a tougher cut of meat that requires a much longer cook time. Use stew meat to make Beef Stew instead.
How to Cook Steak Tips
I use a variation of my favorite Steak Marinade in this recipe. It’s garlicky, savory and just so good!
Marinate the steak: First, cut the steak into 1-inch cubes. Make the marinade by combining the soy sauce, olive oil, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, salt and pepper. Coat the steak pieces with the marinade and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes and up to 6 hours.

Cook the steak tips: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large heavy skillet, such as a cast iron skillet, over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the steak tips in a single layer in the pan, and discard the used marinade. Let the steak tips sear without moving them for 2-3 minutes. Flip and cook on the other side for 2-3 minutes, then flip again and cook for 2-3 minutes more, until they reach your desired doneness.

Keep These in Mind for the Best Juicy Steak Tips
- Cut the steak yourself into evenly sized pieces or use pre-cut steak tips.
- Let the marinated steak tips come to room temperature for 15 minutes before cooking. This helps them to cook evenly, so the meat stays more tender and juicy.
- A cast iron skillet works best for getting those browned caramelized edges. Cast iron gets nice and hot and provides even heat throughout the pan.
- Use an instant read thermometer to cook them to your liking. I find that medium to medium-well is best for steak bites with the best balance of flavor and tenderness. Aim to cook them to 135-150° F in the center.
What to Serve with Steak Bites
Here are my favorite ways to serve these:
- For dinner, I love these steak tips served with Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes, Roasted Carrots or Grilled Asparagus.
- They make an amazing steak salad, with fresh mixed greens, sliced cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, blue cheese and Balsamic Vinaigrette.
- I like to add leftovers to a wrap for lunch with whatever veggies I have to use up in my fridge.
