Healthier Chocolate Chip Waffles
A waffle that the whole family will get excited about. These Healthier Chocolate Chip Waffles are so good on their own, you don’t even need maple syrup! (But I won’t tell if you drizzle some on anyways.)
Some mornings, it’s harder to get out of bed than others. For me, and for my kids. But I have a little secret that’s guaranteed to help my little ones hop right out of bed and get dressed in a flash: chocolate chip waffles. Once they hear that chocolate chip waffles are on the breakfast menu, their whole attitude changes. You know what? These Chocolate Chip Waffles totally lure me out of bed too.
Do I really feed my kids chocolate for breakfast? Sure do. Just think of all of the antioxidants. 😉 Plus, these are Healthier Chocolate Chip Waffles. Just the fact that they’re homemade makes them a million times better than any frozen waffle you’ll find at the store. (And yes, even I rely on those from time to time. We do what we gotta do to get breakfast on the table and eaten, right?) But more importantly, these waffles are made with white whole-wheat flour and the whole batch contains a mere one tablespoon of pure maple syrup as sweetener.
I often make a big batch of these Chocolate Chip Waffles on a weekend morning, and freeze the leftovers in a zip-top bag for weekday breakfasts. Frozen homemade waffles = just as convenient as the ones from the grocery store frozen food section.
Tips for Making Chocolate Chip Waffles:
- Heat the butter until just melted. Let the melted butter stand for a minute before adding to the bowl. (You don’t want hot butter to cook the eggs.)
- Use Mini Chocolate Chips for a more even chocolatey appearance.
- Make a double batch and freeze the extra waffles for easy weekday mornings.

I’m adding a waffle maker to my grocery list – how do I not already have one?!
How do you not have a waffle maker?! I think you need to fix that ASAP! 🙂
These are the most perfect healthy waffles ever. I love how freezer friendly they are!
Thanks, Jocelyn! I freeze so many things these days I’m starting to think I need a bigger freezer!
“Healthy” and “chocolate chip waffles” in the same sentence is what I like to hear! Those waffles look SO delicious!! 🙂
Thanks, Christina! You can’t go wrong with a little chocolate. 🙂
Your waffles look perfect Kristine! Whenever I make waffles, they come out all wonky with not enough batter to make a perfect circle. Guess that means I should keep making them to get lots of practice, right?
It does take some practice to figure out the right amount of batter for your waffle iron. Mine don’t always look this perfect though! I saved the best ones for the photos. 🙂
I would be SO happy with these for breakfast – they look amazing! And I love that they’re healthy. Pinned!
Thanks, Rachel! I love how when you make homemade versions of things you can add a little chocolate and still consider them healthy because you control the other ingredients. 🙂
This is my kind of healthy breakfast! I’d jump right out of bed in the morning to eat these. 🙂
It’s all about the chocolate, isn’t it? These work every time on my daughter! 🙂
No judging here — we’ve been eating Chocolate Cheerios for breakfast lately! Though at first my toddler was convinced she didn’t like them… it didn’t take long for her to get on board! These are WAY better! I’m going to have to give my husband the recipe so he can use them to lure me out of bed 🙂
Yes! You should totally put your husband in charge of making these for you! I bet your daughter would love them!
I am SO not a morning person, but these waffles would definitely get me out of bed! They look delicious, and I don’t mind one bit that there are chocolate chips in there 😉
Thanks, Denise! I feel like I’ve been adding chocolate chips to everything lately. A little chocolate just makes everything better!
I definitely need to get my hands on a waffle iron so I can make these chocolate chip waffles. They look so delicious and I am craving a stack right now Kristine!
We love making waffles for breakfast (or dinner), and I can’t imagine living without my waffle iron! You really should get one! 🙂
I love adding chocolate chips to waffles! These look fantastic, Kristine! The fact that they’re healthy too doesn’t hurt. Pinned 🙂
The little bit of sweetness that the chocolate chips add is hard to resist, isn’t it? 🙂
These look super delicious! and they’re healthy too?! I cant wait to try these 🙂
Thanks, Kathleen!
These waffles look so good, I will definitely try them:) Pinned it!
Thanks, Ilona! I hope you enjoy them as much as we do! 🙂
These look so yummy! I love freezing leftover homemade waffles and pancakes… they are so easy to reheat in the toaster oven! I think I need to make a batch for my freezer ASAP!!
Thanks, Jess! My last batch is almost gone from my freezer, so I’m thinking I’ll be making more of these really soon! We just can’t get enough of them!
do you happen to know the nutritional facts on these?
Thanks for reading, Angela! I don’t calculate nutritional information for my recipes, but there are many online calculators that you can use if you are interested.
I made these this morning (in giant pancake form) and they were so good! Thanks for the recipe!!
I’m so glad you liked these! Thanks for letting me know. 🙂 Good to know they worked as pancakes!
Made these this morning & they were wonderful! I doubled the batch so we’d be ready for back to school mornings too 😉
I’m so glad you liked these, Jacquie! I appreciate you taking the time to let me know. I’ve got a batch of waffles in my freezer for back to school mornings too!
So I just made these they are great but i altered the recipe a little to suit our taste buds . I tend to find great recipes and gradually over making the 2-3 times change them to suit our family needs. I made this recipe but used 1 cup of plain yogurt and 1/2 cup of water to replace the buttermilk and i also used cinnamon applesauce in place of the butter. And I did 2 T of maple syrup instead but not sure that was needed. They came out light like I love, next time I will use 6 T of flax soaked in place of two eggs.
Thank you for sharing. It looks really good and makes me want to try doing myself at home.
Do you also have a nutrition info and calories per serving?
🙂
Thank you, Weiwhin! At this time I’m not calculating nutrition info for my recipes, but it is something I am looking into for the future.
My kids really loved these! I think I’ll 1 1/2 the recipe next time so that we have a little leftover. Thanks for sharing healthy recipes!
I’m happy to hear these were a hit! Leftovers are great to keep in the freezer. 🙂
How long do they stay good in the freezer?
And do you let them cool first before freezing?
Yes, let them cool completely before freezing. They should last for 3 months in the freezer. Enjoy!
