This bruschetta recipe features toasted baguette slices rubbed with garlic and topped with fresh tomatoes and basil. It’s a simple, crowd-pleasing appetizer that comes together in minutes!

Bruschetta is one of my favorite appetizers to bring to a party. The flavors are bright and fresh, the ingredients are simple, and it’s a wonderful way to showcase ripe, juicy tomatoes. I like to set out the toasts alongside a bowl of the tomato topping so guests can spoon it on themselves, keeping the bread perfectly crunchy until the last bite.
The secret to truly great bruschetta is rubbing the warm bread with a raw garlic clove straight out of the oven. It makes all the difference! Be sure to use the ripest, most flavorful tomatoes you can find, since they’re the star of the dish. My daughter declared these the best thing she’s ever eaten, and I’m confident this bruschetta recipe will be a hit at your next get-together!
Ingredient Notes

- Tomatoes: Italian Roma tomatoes are the classic choice, but you can use any good-quality ripe tomatoes, such as heirloom or vine-ripened tomatoes.
- Olive Oil: Use a good quality extra virgin olive oil for the best flavor. It brings richness and ties everything together.
- Balsamic Vinegar: Again, quality matters. I like to use an aged balsamic vinegar that’s thick, sweet and tangy. Whole Foods has a great aged balsamic vinegar of Modena.
- Garlic: We mix minced garlic into the topping and rub a halved garlic clove onto the toasted bread for extra flavor.
- Salt and Pepper: To bring out all of the flavors.
- Fresh Basil: The perfect herb to complement the tomatoes in the topping.
- Baguette: A sturdy baguette works best. Slice it on a slight diagonal for more surface area.
How to Make Bruschetta
Make the tomato topping. Combine the chopped tomatoes, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic, fine sea salt and black pepper. Then gently stir in the fresh basil. Set aside for 20-30 minutes to allow the flavors to develop.

Make the toasts. Cut the baguette on the diagonal into ½-inch thick slices. Arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet and brush top sides lightly with olive oil. Toast the bread in the oven for 5-7 minutes, until lightly golden. While the bread is hot from the oven, cut a garlic clove in half. Rub the warm toasts with the cut side of the garlic.

To serve, spoon some of the tomato mixture on top of each toast. Enjoy!
Tips for Perfect Bruschetta Every Time
- Toast the bread well. You want a nice golden crust so the bread stays crisp.
- Rub with garlic while hot. As soon as the bread comes out of the oven, rub a cut raw garlic clove directly on the toasts. The heat softens the garlic just enough to melt into the bread, bringing incredible flavor.
- Use the best tomatoes you can find. Since tomatoes are the star, quality matters. Roma, heirloom, or vine-ripened tomatoes are all great choices. Avoid watery tomatoes and discard excess juices, which can make the topping soggy.
- Fresh basil is a must. If you’re making the topping ahead for a party, add the fresh basil right before serving so it stays bright and doesn’t wilt or turn dark.
- Serve immediately. Assemble just before eating, or set out the toasts and topping separately so guests can build their own. This keeps the bread crunchy and prevents sogginess.
