This berry smoothie is bursting with sweet berry flavor! Made with frozen berries, it’s cool, creamy and refreshing.

My family loves smoothies for snacks and quick breakfasts, and this berry smoothie is one of our very favorites!
This berry smoothie is made with three kinds of frozen berries, banana and Greek yogurt. I love adding berries to smoothies because they add fruity flavor and are so convenient to keep on hand in the freezer. I tested this recipe with and without Greek yogurt. I found that the yogurt really improves the texture of the smoothie, making it slightly creamy while also bringing out the sweet berry flavor.
Berry Smoothie Ingredients
You’ll need just six ingredients to make this berry smoothie. Be sure to use frozen berries, since they will both thicken the smoothie and make it ice-cold.
- Frozen Strawberries, Frozen Raspberries & Frozen Blueberries: This trio of berries makes the best mixed berry smoothie! If you only have two out of these three types of berries on hand, that will work, too. You can also use frozen mixed berries. (I like to keep a big bag of them on hand in my freezer!)
- Banana: The banana sweetens the smoothie. Be sure to use a ripe banana for maximum sweetness. If you want to make a smoothie with no banana, you may wish to add a tablespoon of pure maple syrup or honey to sweeten the smoothie. I’ve found that the berries aren’t quite sweet enough on their own for our tastes.
- Plain Greek Yogurt: I tested this smoothie with and without the yogurt and we much preferred this berry smoothie with a little Greek yogurt blended in. The yogurt makes it slightly creamy and helps the berries to blend up smoothly. It also helps to make the smoothie more satiating.
- Almond Milk: You’ll need some liquid to make the smoothie blend up smoothly. I usually use unsweetened almond milk. Feel free to use another nondairy milk, such as oat milk, or dairy milk, if you prefer.

How to Make a Berry Smoothie
This smoothie couldn’t be easier to make!
First, add all of the ingredients to a blender: the frozen berries, banana, Greek yogurt and your liquid of choice.
Then blend until smooth, starting with the blender on low speed and gradually increasing the speed to fully blend the smoothie. A high powered blender works best here because it will fully puree the raspberry seeds. Any blender will work, though!
If the smoothie is too thick, you can blend in a little more milk. Then serve and enjoy!
Tips for Making the Best Smoothie
I’ve made a lot of smoothies over the years, and I’ve learned a few tips and tricks along the way.
- Start with less liquid than you think you need. You can always add more liquid to get to your desired consistency.
- Layer the smoothie ingredients for the most efficient blending. Greens, such as spinach or kale, should be at the bottom of the blender to give them a head start on blending up smoothly. The same goes for raw oats, nuts and frozen fruit. Add ingredients such as nut butters or yogurt on top of the fruits and vegetables to prevent them from sticking to the bottom of your blender.
- Begin blending on low speed and increase to higher speed as the smoothie starts to come together.
- Don’t overfill the blender. If you are making a double or triple batch to feed a crowd, start by adding only part of the frozen ingredients. Then add more once you get the first addition blended smooth. I do this when I make enough smoothies to feed myself and my five kids. If you fill the blender too full to start with it will be difficult to blend the smoothie.
- As you blend, you may have to occasionally stop and stir, shake, or use your blender’s tamper to mix the ingredients. Sometimes you can get an air bubble at the bottom that prevents the blender from mixing the smoothie.
- If you make smoothies often, a high powered blender can save you time and effort.
Recipe Variations
Here are a few ideas for ways to adapt this berry smoothie recipe.
- You can use a package of frozen mixed berries instead of the three individual berries listed in this recipe. Just be sure to use 2 cups of berries total.
- Add a teaspoon of ground flax seed, chia seeds or hemp seeds.
- To make this berry smoothie more filling for breakfast, add 2-3 tablespoons of old fashioned rolled oats along with the other ingredients. Or try my Oatmeal Breakfast Smoothie recipe.
- Add 1 tablespoon of almond butter or peanut butter.
- Add fresh spinach. You won’t taste the spinach, but it will alter the color of the smoothie.
- For a dairy-free smoothie, substitute dairy-free yogurt for the plain Greek yogurt and use nondairy milk.
